EPISODE DESCRIPTION:

This is the first episode of our #EJVoices series, which shares stories centered around environmental justice. In this episode, we spoke with Xavier Boatright — an environmental justice organizer and researcher who currently holds the position of Strategic Partnerships Director at Conservation Voters of South Carolina (CVSC), where he works to ensure equal access to clean air, clean water, and safe spaces to spend time outside, in his community. Xavier shares his experience growing up on a farm, getting drafted into and playing for the NFL, and going up against Duke Energy with his community in an environmental justice success story.

INDIVIDUALS FEATURED IN THIS EPISODE:

Xavier Boatright (he/his) is a native of Manning, SC, where he grew up on a family farm in rural Clarendon County. Xavier holds an undergraduate degree in Biology and a minor in Sociology from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. He also holds a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. Xavier spent six years in Asheville, NC, as an Environmental Justice Organizer and Researcher for Clean Water for North Carolina (CWFNC) supporting communities impacted by coal plant emissions and coal ash contamination across the state. During his time at CWFNC, Xavier collaborated with many nonprofits and community groups to retire the coal-fired boilers at the Asheville Steam Station, secure clean water for coal plant neighbors, and force the historic complete excavation of all leaking unlined coal ash pits across the state of North Carolina. Once completed, the coal ash excavation will be the largest waste cleanup in United States history. Most recently, Xavier spent nearly two years with The Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign in South Carolina as an Organizing Representative working to achieve cheaper cleaner energy in the state. While with The Sierra Club, Xavier co-organized a South Carolina People’s Energy Plan that garnered endorsements from over 30 organizations and businesses from across the state. He also worked with coal plant neighbors and nonprofits to pass utility reform legislation that includes Just Transition, which requires the utility to work and plan closely alongside the neighboring community during coal plant closures to minimize impacts of plant closures on communities. Xavier is honored to currently serve Environmental Justice communities in the role of Strategic Partnerships Director at Conservation Voters of South Carolina (CVSC) to help strengthen both CVSC and the conservation/environmental movement in South Carolina.
